TN: 1990 Ridge Geyserville

  • 1990 Ridge Geyserville - USA, California, Sonoma County (2/22/2009)
    64% Zinfandel, 18% Petite Sirah, 18% Carignane.

Deep garnet with the slightest amber at the edge. Bit of sediment. Plum is dominant on the nose, and joined by dark brambleberry fruit, woodsy cedar/rosemary, cocoa, and a hint of oaky vanilla. Bright and fruity on the attack, with soft, lush tannins and juicy acidity in the middle and a slight astringency on the finish. Love me a good ole Geyserville. 13.9% alcohol.

Nice! Been thinking about picking up some old Geezerville’s off WineBid…and it looks like that chance is running out this week as I type.

I’ve had only their 1995, a gift, among other bottles, from Rod Schiffman when he visited me last year. My wife loved it and it was her favorite red during our farewell steak dinner for the Schiffmans. She preferred it over the 1997 Thackery Orion, 1996 Cos d’Estournel (magnum), 1996 de Fieuzal, etc. served at the dinner.

I picked up this '90 and a '91 recently. I wish more Zins were like this. It’s not exactly elegant, mind you, but it’s not a bruiser, either. It’s just… yummy.

Notably absent are your impressions of the wine, Noel. Steve and I are both… [rofl.gif]

Heh heh. You two are too perceptive. I liked it well enough, but my favorite with the steak was the Thackery Orion - the Doc and Stockbroker as well. We drank the Cos after dinner and before dessert.

Thanks for the note, Melissa. Slowly but surely I’ve been buying older vintages of this as it’s my wife and mine favorite Zin out there. Especially for the price.

I just found a 3L of the 2004 for $120.

Buy it!!! We just had an '04 Montbello for $120…tighter than a squires sphincter, but
actually in honor of Donn Reisen. I would jump on that 3L pronto!

Already done.

Thanks for the idea! '04 is our wedding year, and I just found an inexpensive magnum. I foresee a tenth anniversary Flannery and Zins barbecue.

Well, except that our anniversary is in February and it’s always cold and rainy here. We’ll have to host it somewhere warm. Like maybe Chateau French.

'04 is birthyear for Avery. Wine should hold up in that format…question is can I hold off?

had an 04 MB out of a 375 a few months back and thought that was supertight!

Tonight’s bottle of 1990 Geyserville is so good that I think it’s surpassed 1991 as my favorite and I didn’t think that was possible. What’s more, I don’t think this will peak for another 5 or 10 years. So rich, so many flavors, delicious.

Ridge hit it out of the park in 1990 and 1991 with both the Geyserville and Lytton Springs. Shortly after release I gave the edge to Geyserville in 1990 and Lytton Springs in 1991. Over the years I have gone back and forth but have never been disappointed in either. Sadly my bottles are long gone.

Opened a 2001 Geezer after my wife and I polished off a 2004 Novy Gary’s Syrah last night. Wasn’t too impressed last night (coulda been too much wine) but tonight it was singing. Perfectly polished Geyserville.

I’ve not had great luck with the 90 LS but that 90 Geezer is nearly always special!
