TN: 1990 Percarlo

Color still surprisingly dark purple, barely translucent - nice legs. A lot going on with the nose - flowers (violets?), some forest floor & funk, red fruits, blood. Then pristinely sweet fruit on the palate - very impressive, with a lip-smackingly tasty deliciousness to it - I’m not sure if this bottle will last until the pizza gets here [wink.gif] . Exquisitely balanced, fully mature wine tonight. I’ve experienced some bottle variation with this wine from time-to-time, but tonight it is really rocking!

Great note, thanks. I was pretty close to opening a 99 last night. No hurry I guess

Great to hear Bob… was the oak fully integrated? Have you had 85 or 88 recently? Hope all is well

Good to hear.

Dranka 1997 a couple of years ago and was unimpressed, but I have enjoyed the 2001, 2003 and 2004 Percarlo.

Does the La Ricolma age as well?

Henry, no discernible oak from my standpoint, but I am not as oak averse as some. And I have not had an '88 or '85 recently, although I did come across an '88 Pertimali the other day, so I may pull that cork in the near future.

Bobbo – '88 Pertimail is in a stunningly excellent place now…

Bob – I tasted the 90 Percarlo last night, and this bottle rocked. Much more so than one I had about 2 years ago. I agree with you regarding the surprisingly dark color, great freshness, bracing acidity, dark fruit, beautiful complex bouquet, violets, a touch of anise, oak is there but well integrated. A very powerful showing… Simply, a magnificent bottle of sangiovese.

Iffy. I had the 2000 Ricolma about 5 years past release and it had turned into a mocha oak monster not unlike a Monbousquet. I also had the 1998 with about the same age on it and it was tannic and dumb. Perhaps the latter could blossom into something, but the former was a disaster.

I had the 90 Percarlo last may in a 8 vintage Percarlo vetical and the 90 may have been the wine of the tasting.

No Percarlo for me last night but I did have many Montevertine. Only reason I bring it up is that I remember buying both the 90 il Sodaccio and 90 Percarlo for about the same price. Il Sodaccio still had the $27.99 price tag on it. It was excellent by the way, not as good as the 78 Pergole Torte or 88 Montevertine Reserva, or the 90 Percarlo for that matter, but still a wonderful glass of mature Sangiovese!
