1990 Krug Champagne Brut- France, Champagne (9/5/2009)
Not too much to say here as the quality of this wine is well documented. I smell a turning point which is the thrust of this note. If this bottle is any indication the mushroomy nutty notes of age are beginning to emerge here. Über creamy, this is still a big BIG wine that would hold up to just about any cream sauce. Right now this would pair perfectly with Steve Saxon’s mushroom lasagna. Another creamy, dreamy Krug. (97 pts.)
HI Leah,
It’s more open than it was on release but it’s still pretty young. We last had it about a month ago and it took 1/2 hour to 45 minutes before it opened up. Once it opened up it was sublime… creamy, pillowy, doughy fruit with a nice acidic backbone. To me the '96 is a drink now, tomorrow, next month, next year, whenever possible over the next 30 years wine.
I agree with Ed except it’s a whenever possible drink for the rest of your life - assuming you’re not 21 years old and are going to live until 121, and even then…
It definitely benefits from being oipened a couple of hours in advance.
I’d also try a bottle of '88 Krug which is better than the '90 and is only a few $ more. That vintage will also outlive most of us.
