TN: 1990 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac)

  • 1990 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (2/13/2014)
IWFS Chicago 792nd dinner at Goosefoot - A big, brooding wine that isn’t even close to being ready to drink. Color is still dark red with no signs of aging. Dark berry flavors but with a slight vegetal streak due to its youth. The nose is still a bit muted, but is showing all the classic Pauillac traits of cedar, leather and violets. In my opinion, well stored bottles shouldn’t be opened for at least another 7-10 years, otherwise you’ll miss out on what this wine will truly have to offer. (95 pts.)

Recently had an 89’ with very similar notes. Somewhat disappointing considering that I hadn’t even thought that it might still be so primary.

It’s been said before but the 89 and 90 from Pichon Baron, Lynch Bages and Montrose could all be 50 year wines.

Tom

Opened a 375ml of this last year and sounded about the same. I agree a 750ml of this could go 40-50 years easy

Recently a magnum 1985, also not at its peak moment (5 years more or so?)

Agreed Tom. All of those are pretty exceptional wines. Amazing they were all available at around $30/bottle on release.

I find the 1990 Lynch Bages is more mature than the Pichon Baron or Montrose, but the 1989s are really backward.
