Pulled an orphan bottle of the 1990 Compaccio from the cellar to accompany some cannelloni stuffed with Italian sausage this evening. It’s a blend of about two thirds Sangiovese and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon.
High fill, to about 1/4" from the bottom of the cork, which was extracted in one piece. Deep mahogany in colour, with a slight amber rim; aromas penetrating - black fruits and spice; flavours of red and black currents running smoothly over the palate, and extending well to the back; quite full bodied; attractive acidity; nice running texture; extended out to a very long finish, where the black currant fruit lasted on the palate for a long time. An excellent partner for the cannelloni.
Background music was Bill Evans’ solo album Alone.
Hank, long time, no post - good to see you here, my friend .
I have to admit I am no fan of Super Tuscans that marry Sangiovese with Cabernet - I’ve always felt that the Cabernet, almost regardless of the proportion in the blend, tends to overwhelm the Sangio. That said, I am a big fan of anything Bill Evans related, and I’m sure I would have enjoyed the wine-food-music pairing, especially considering the company in which said wine was poured .
Wow, nice job with aging this one. I like this wine, but always drank it too young, starting with 1996 and running through most of a decade. Should have had more patience with them. Don’t see them too much anymore.
I remember this wine fondly, it was the wine on my aunt and uncle’s first date, I sourced him a bunch, it was his first transaction with me, and we shared many bottles together.
You are right about the Cabernet Sauvignon coming through, Bob. I don’t remember noting that when I drank this wine in its relative youth, but the black currant flavours do show now.
While I haven’t posted that much over the past months, I am managing to drink some really good wines from France, Italy, California, etc. While the 2005 Grand Cru Burgundies remain a bit young for current consumption, i have enjoyed several 1er Cru’s of late. On a more formal basis my calendar shows a Commanderie de Bordeaux dinner next week in Edmonton, and a Chaine des Rotisseurs weekend later in September at The Post Hotel in Lake Louise. Some nice wines on the menus for those events.
I know you enjoy Italian wines, Bob, as I do, and I opened a bottle of the 1997 Bricco Manzoni from Rocche dei Manzoni the other night. It was singing!
That Bill Evans CD included mainly ballads and was nice background as Lorraine and I enjoyed dinner.
Thanks, Alan. I have read many of your posts, and happy to see you are continuing to enjoy fine wines, and broadening out from time to time from the wines of Burgundy.
