1990 A. Rafanelli Zinfandel - USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley (8/4/2009)
Had this last week with some double-garlic burgers on foccacia buns. Beautiful deep translucent ruby color. Hints of flint, smoke and graphite on the nose. On the palate, very similar to a resolved Bordeaux. No noticable tannins. Deep supple red fruit notes with lots of smoke, licorice and cedar. Spicy garrigue and black/white pepper notes on the finish with just a touch of alcohol. This was a really good showing for this wine but it lacked some of the 3-dimensional complexity I was hoping for that night. (90 pts.)
