TN: 1989 Mouton

My first experience with a Mouton, so lacking reference points. Decanted for one hour. The nose on this wine is just amazing, there are so many things going on here…flowers, red fruit, coffee, pencil lead, leather. Nothing dominates but you just want to keep on smelling it. The mouthfeel is so elegant, the tannins are integrated, no rough or sharp points. If I was going to be hypercritical, would have thought the finish would have been a bit longer. This is a super elegant bordeaux, the best word I could come up with was alluring. It was a treat to drink.

Sounds good! I haven’t had the '89, but from what I read in Parker’s “Bordeaux” book, it is apparently a successful effort in a style that should be currently fairly mature. That can be a “problem” with “great” vintages like '82 or ‘86 (not that I’ve tried either of those yet!) and wines from vintages that tend to be rather hard by nature. You can read what someone like Parker says about a wine’s style to get a feel for whether it is a good idea to open one now, or if more can be gained by waiting (and of course, this is the hallmark of the best Bordeaux- that they age so darn well. The only problem is how long it can take!). Others’ notes can also be useful, but the storage conditions can be variable so one has to consider that too. My own cellar is passive and varies from about 56 in the winter, to 66 in the summer, and even with those “not too cold” conditions it takes forever for wine to mature!

I don’t have a lot of experience with wines of this caliber…it was only because the audience at a charity event a couple of years ago had no idea how valuable this bottle was. The cork was nearly soaked through, about a 1/4 inch from the top. My guess is this wont improve a lot more but will hold where it.

One of my favorite Mouton’s. Not as full bodied as other vintages and allows the fruit to shine. Super tasty.

For what ever reason, Mouton tended to “underperform” in both 1989 and 1990. That’s not to say their wines were unsatisfactory, but I would rather drink an 89 or 90 Pichon Baron than a Mouton from the same vintage.
