I do think they take a long time to come around…and agree, many don’t do it for me. However, the 90 Georges Lignier and 90 Vogue are both are spectacular imo.
There is no disputing the greatness of Vosne. And there is no disputing the role of personal preferences. I believe your preference for Vosne (disregarding costs for the moment) is more common among Burgheads than my preference for Chambolle. I might feel differently if I had a good supply of DRC…
Ive only had a few but that is my general take as well. One major exception though was a recent 1989 Joseph Drouhin Latricieres Chambertin. I really enjoyed it and felt it held its own with some big guns.
Last old bottle I had was a '71 Bonnes Mares. It was well past it (and from a great cellar). I know I have had a couple from the '40’s about 5-6 years ago, but couldn’t find my notes. I have one group where I see the wines maybe 5 or 6 times a year from different vintages, often it is Musigny.
Never had a great bottle. Ever. Some few maybe around the 92pt range for the top Cru’s, but that would probably top it. The last bottle I had was with Jeremy last year (an '01 Musigny), that whilst it looked ok, was a bit muted and still somewhat oaky, and this definitely needed more time.
I noticed (as did others) that when I tried some of the just released line-ups before (as I have previously noted once or twice) I found them quite generic looking, in especially that I couldn’t tell their terroir at all. Must say, that quite put me off (that, and the oak as well). From what you have described about their methods, that perhaps partly explains this.
BTW, nothing of theirs tasted since vintage '05, so these comments don’t obviously relate to recent vintages…
I also align with Alan on the Jadot BM - but as a youngster (except in the case of Roumier and occasionally de Vogüé) that’s anyway my steady-state for most BMs which I find a bit brutal. I think a large part of the Jadot (but maybe not all) came via Fougeray de Beauclair until 2005/2006 and I usually had a slight preference for the Fougeray.
It’s certainly behind the relative elegance of Ponsot/Chezeax, Drouhin and Fourrier - but as those latter wines appreciate, the Jadot is becoming a relative bargain. I think they have only a couple of barrels…
Hardly surprising, of course. But, FWIW, my notes on the CSJ and Clos de la Roche sound like they were right up there, too, for that vintage. Rousseau was, IMO, at the top in '89. But, I sensed the wines needed drinking relatively early…and I finished mine by the mid-2000s. They were good, though lacking that something extra to make them great…much like the vintage. (FWIW, also, I found Corton to have been particularly successful in '89).
Leroy made better wines than DRC, I think I had a Roty Charmes TVV that was good, and a Rouget Echezeaux as well, but not much else that even comes to mind…
I’ll have to dig my notes out. I do remember that they were squeezed in between two vintages that were considered excellent and very concentrated, and that they lacked the concentration of either the '88s or the '90s…by quite a bit. Both had really nice, long finishes as a gross generality. The '89s didn’t and were nice and pleasant, but…not much more, as I recall. But, I will check my notes from a trip in summer '90, if I can find them.
