TN: 1989 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape

  • 1989 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (11/8/2010)
This is always a nice wine, although as time goes on my preferences swing more and more to the 1990. Nonetheless, deep, bloody, and loaded with spicecake on the approach. The palate is a bit wound up and muddled, but then this finishes out with nice and very pleasing notes of pine and bright red fruit. Very CDP with dusky notes atop the garrigue. I just can’t tell if this is fading or holding back, but having had a chance to follow this one for 7+ years and about 20 tastes I tend to lean a bit to the former. Nonetheless, this isn’t moving anywhere in a huge hurry and is always a treat. (93 pts.)

8mos. back some friends and I opened one of these and alas corked…damn, but you could see the pedigree. In a twist of good fate about a month later I was able to try the '90.
It was a wonderful wine. Recently tasted the '07, it’s going to be a good one To me the mourvedre was less pronounced which suites my palate. Cheers

I agree, the 89 is a tremendous wine but a clean bottle of the 90 is really special.

Yes the '90 is great and I feel possibly better that the '89
