TN: 1987 Kalin Cellars Sémillon (USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Livermore Valley)

Had been wanting to try a Kalin Semillon for a while now. Got the chance with this interesting example. First off, would have never guessed a 22 year old wine by the color: a medium golden yellow not unlike many 7-8 year old White Burgs. First whiff offered up tell-tale Sherry aromas of roasted almonds, a brininess that I could only describe as green olives and some bitter orange peel. Within 15 or so minutes of airtime, it mellowed into a rich and complex bouquet of marzipan, candle wax and roasted pear. In the mouth, it was quite rich and unctuous, with waxy yellow fruit and floral notes, but retained an unbelievably fresh acidity that complemented its richness perfectly. This is definitely an acquired taste but proves what Semillon can be in the hands of an experienced winemaker and with some age on it. Solid A.

P.S. The wine was on the list for $45! The 1988 was as well…for $40! A bargain through and through.
