TN: 1987 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection (USA, California, Napa Valley)

  • 1987 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection - USA, California, Napa Valley (3/15/2014)
Excellent, and fully mature now. Medium ruby core, gently faded to a tawny rim; bright, and clear. Lovely tertiary aromas of leather, tobacco, plum and cassis, with just a hint of spice and earth. Medium-bodied, and still well-lifted, with cool, seamless red and black fruits offering flavors that largely follow the nose, but also offering a finish that’s long, and deeply satisfying. This is really quite beautiful, and continued to improve, albeit subtly, over the course of the next hour. Classy stuff that calls to a past age. highly recommended, 13,0% abv, drink thru 2020

Cork, color and general condition, all excellent. 3 hour slow-O, poured to decanter and served non-blind. Don’t wait, open this today.

Thanks for that thorough review. Nice job. A number score would be better, but I get the point.

Thanks for the great note.

You have motivated me to kill one this coming week!

I would suggest 60-90 minutes in decanter, then work your way slowly - ours improved each 15 minutes. I saw the pundit’s scores and some other tasting notes after I posted my note, thought maybe I got lucky with a really great bottle. I sincerely hope your experience is as fortunate as ours was.

Tim, we used 8 bottles of this wine recently for a wine dinner and they were all consistently great. It is in a very nice place.

any opinions on 1989,1990,1991,1992?
I think I’ll stand up the 1989.
