TN: 1986 Louis Metaireau Muscadet Cuvee 1

These are the kind of wines that make me happy, a wine that you expect nothing from but gives so much pleasure when opened. Two random bottles of Muscadet from a cellar purchase that was mostly Burgundy. We paid $14 a bottle for them, what a deal.
Color is so young looking, no browning just the a beautiful deep straw/yellow/green color.
Ocean was the first thing that came to mind. As Ian said the nose “is like low tide in a clean harbor.” Just beautiful nose, lemons and ocean and a little musty funk; smells like older 1er Chablis.
To use a cliche, the palate is like razor blades, mix lemon juice, ocean water and chalk and you have an idea what this taste like. I can almost close my eyes and be transported to the beach. I wish I had cases of this, there is such length and layered flavors.
Does Muscadet ever die? Such an impressive showing for a humble table wine. This probably could last another 15 years without issue, probably cost $5 back it in the 80s when I was watching Sesame Street.
I wish I could be eating oysters right now as I drink this.
My wine of the year so far.

Yum. Great note.

Awesome. Love to hear things like this. Thanks for the note.

Thanks for the note. I have to admit I haven’t had much success with mature wines from this producer, despite for many years this being one of the region’s most famous names. I am envious of your experience with this wine. I had very recently a Cuvée One from the 2000 vintage, which was pretty OK, but prior to that a rather disappointing 1989 Cuvée Premier Jour. Other producers turn out better wines I think (Luneau-Papin, Pepière, even Chereau-Carré), although tastes of recent vintages have been encouraging.
