TN: 1985 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena)

  • 1985 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Estate - USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena (12/16/2009)
13.2% alcohol. From magnum. At its peak. A beautiful wine, filled with classic Napa Cabernet notes on the nose: black currant, tobacco, cedary spice, and dried flowers. On the palate, pretty fruit that isn’t tired, although it is mature. A dried edge to the currant fruit, and the secondary, earthy notes on this wine are fantastic. A gentle wine in the mouth, plush and graceful, with impeccable balance. The acidity is still kicking, and the tannins have fully resolved, giving this a terrific finish. Such a treat to drink Cab that has aged so beautifully. A-

Nice note. We’ll be continuing an annual Spottswoode vertical in February and will be picking up in the mid-80s.

Great note Tom. Thanks to Daniel for sharing it with us. I was surprised by it’s youth and strength of the fruit at almost 25 years.

Here are Mike’s notes for the 1984 from a 3L a little under a year ago.

Steve has broadened my appreciation for this fine label.

Look forward to further education this winter… [wink.gif]

Nice note, Tom.

Thanks, gents … I love aged Cab. This was killer. I just like the sensibility as this bottle aged.

I have yet to be disappopinted by a Spotswoode Cab, but geez Tom, 25 years old, all those nice components and an A-?? I think you need to reconsider that one.
