TN: 1985 Domaine Joseph Voillot Volnay 1er Cru 1er Cru

  • 1985 Domaine Joseph Voillot Volnay 1er Cru 1er Cru - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru (9/6/2009)
This poured a very pale garnet. Holding it up to the light it is the color of a socal sunset, a limpid orange almost. Took a few minutes to flesh out and then provided a huge outpouring of sappy, intense red fruit, sous bois, sweet earth and hints of baking spice and mineral. It is fair to say that this is mature enough to make the origin hard to decipher, but it was also good enough that it didn’t matter. Perfectly poised, beguiling nose and a weightless, ethereal palate with such red fruited and sous bois intensity and great finishing persistence. I’m not going to say this has the complexity of a great producer’s Cote de Nuits Grand Cru, but it is honestly one of the most enjoyable bottles we’ve opened in a long, long time.
