TN: 1983 Château Mouton Rothschild (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac)

  • 1983 Château Mouton Rothschild - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (7/18/2013)
Visual: Burgundy colored on the medium to dark side. Some bricking at the edges, but not too much.

Nose: Fantastic nose of mint, cedar, mushrooms and peat

Palate: More red fruited than black fruited. Soil, a slight hint of tobacco. Very feminine and pretty with well balanced tannins.

Fantastic wine that punches well above its weight. This wine was feminine, (which is not what I usually expect from Mouton!), and pretty. I would have guessed that this was from a great vintage year. It was a strong contrast to the '82 Pichon Lalande, which was all about power and structure. Both were great wines, but I think I might give the '83 Mouton the edge. This wine has at least 10 years to go. It is at peak, with good secondary and some tertiary flavors. Solid A.

What is “bricking”?

Bricking is when the maroon color loses some of its richness and the color fades to a red brick color.

I haven’t had it, but I think 83 as a vintage is dramatically underrated. Thanks for the note.

I had this five years ago on my bday. Must have been bad storage. Thin and uninspiring

Hosted a large 83 horizontal two months ago. '83 Mouton was WOTN, served blind to everyone but me. I was 97 points on it. If stored well it is quite thrilling. It edged out the Latour, Margaux, Pichon Lalande, and '84 Montelena. Nice note.
