TN: 1979 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (USA, California, Napa Valley)

  • 1979 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve - USA, California, Napa Valley (10/8/2009)
Popped this for Chad’s 30th. Mature nose of dried cherries, plums, prunes, leather, olives, cedar, and a bit of tobacco.
Fruit is still there with dried cherries jumping out,a bit of red currant, lots of leather, and even some mint. The finish wants to really coat
the back palate but gets clipped right at the moment of truth. Lively acidity with no perceivable tannins. The mouth feel is really soft and mellow.
Flavors are there but just a touch muted. This was a magnum and it had plenty of energy even though it is clearly on the decline. Just a great experience
with my family and friends. We consumed this over nearly two hours and it hung in there pretty well.A big thanks to
Errol Kovitch for the beautiful bottle

There’s not much better than a perfect bottle of Mondavi Reserve.

Thanks for posting the note S L. I have a mag of this on tap for my 30th in Dec. Seems the notes for the mags are much more consistent (and as expected still hanging to life better) than the 750’s.

I can’t speak for the 750’s but this wine held up or got better over the two hours that we enjoyed it. Hope it shows well for you on your B-day.

Actually glad I didn’t buy 750s after this review. I spied some for most of the summer, and ultimately passed. I bought some Diamond Creek instead, hoping that pays off.

You’re welcome! Glad it contributed to a great evening.
