TN: 1979 Château Suduiraut (France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes)

  • 1979 Château Suduiraut - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes (1/12/2012)
Spinning capsule, but busted cork(as you can see). Copper tea in color. Old lady closet, sweet peach, apricot, slight tawny caramel, grilled pineapple drizzled with honey nose. Sweet botrytis rotted fruit…with alive orange acidity. Sharp and angular…moth balls I get? Not the freshest of wines…has deep honeyed, apricot, marzipan flavors…as well as some dried oranges, and pineapples…candied ginger, tobacco. For its age, and all the copper/mothball funkiness…it is actually kind of a nice sip! Sweet and alive…dried floral fruit finish…funky complexities. Not in great balance…but it satisfies for what I paid. (88 pts.)

Moth balls? [scratch.gif]
This must have something to do with the bottle history

What a revelation! Last time I tasted this wine, admittedly several years earlier, I was disapointed - not now and I have a few bottles left. Beautiful deep orange gold colour. Marvellous nose of candied fruits, ripe citrus, toffee and barley sugar. Coats the mouth with unctious, rich fruits and spices - complex but not cloying as balanced by lovely acidity showing mid palate. The flavours just keep lingering long after this delicious mouthfull is gone. A beautiful mature wine that has finally reached its zenith after a shaky start in the early years. Wonderful. #94 pts.#
