We had a get together last week with the first white truffles of the season (at least to my knowledge) in Los Angeles with some really amazing barolos and burgundy.
90 Monfortino out of mag was stunning and fresh, 99 roulot perrieres was a baby but intense… and some other great wines… but I wanted to highlight my potential WOTY. A real treat to try.
1978 Domaine Dujac Charmes-Chambertin- France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru (10/14/2014)
I think my ambivalence to Dujac’s Charmes Chambertin has been well noted over the years, even the 90 and 93 didn’t do it for me (the 00 was pretty smokin tho) but this wine completely blew my mind. WOTY candidate.
The nose immediately opens up to sweet earthy cherries and herbs.
Pure clean red fruit running throughout the palate, the extraction has died down and the fruit is just in a perfect spot where it shows brightness without dominating the wine. The flavors are incredibly complex and concentrated with loads of fruit, floral notes and just a hint of truffle.
The texture is beyond soft, with that seamless cooling fruit just running down into the finish. The tannins have completely integrated and the flavors just sit on your palate as the finish persists long after you’ve taken your sip.
Lovely. . . sounds fantastic buddy! Joe, Charlie, what is it about Dujac Charmes that doesn’t impress you? None of the recent good vintages are well made?
Delicious fruit, spice, secondary nuances. Balanced. No need to extrapolate potential or guess how many more years it’ll need to peak. This was perfect.
I saved a glass to follow throughout the evening. The nose was so charming I could smell it all night and did. The last drop was a touch acidic but it was perfect and delicious for the 3 hours before.
Only one has been bought up by Leroy in 1989, the other is still producing.
However both were rather rustic producers in the 80ies … haven´t had any 78.
