TN: 1978 Dom Perignon

Late disgorged bottles can reach very high levels, but I almost always prefer a perfect original disgorgement.
What you’re getting with the P2 etc is consistency and known provenance (in general). But you are paying for those two things.

Wonderful note.

I had a very similar experience with the ‘78 Dom a couple years ago. Beautiful wine.

Well that did not take very long at all… just took a flyer on a 1973 at auction. Low-ish ullage (3cm) but at least it was cheap. Will report back champagne.gif

We recently had a 1978 Veuve Cave Privee Rose that was sublime. Not sure how 1978 ranks in terms of Champagne vintages, but if these two data points mean anything, it seems like it was a good year.

“But if you try sometimes, well, you might find
You get what you need”
Fantastic note and the music just goes.

Actually 1978 isn’t highly regarded and there are a number of better vintages in the '70’s.
But, there are always a few very good Champagnes from every declared vintage.

3cm below the foil is pretty low. But, the color is more important.

I have one '78 Dom left. Been waiting for a good time to drink it. Maybe that good time needs to be a Wednesday…

A mag of '82 is still my high point for aged DP.

Next Wednesday is the perfect day to open ‘78 Dom.
