TN: 1976 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche

  • 1976 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru (12/16/2013)
During a visit to Dujac 6 year’s ago Jacques Seysses explained a bit about this vintage describing how it was a hot year and that a friend and mentor of his from Beaujolais had convinced him to let the fruit hang a little longer in hot years believing that fast ripening may not lead to proper phenolic ripeness. So that he wasn’t tempted to pick Jacques headed off to Bordeaux for a week of tasting mid-vintage in this year.

Last night’s bottle of 76 Clos La Roche (Roz must have chosen the label in 76) was in fine form. It had a fair bit of cellar stink when first opened but breathed up really well. There were notes of dried fig, sweet meats, baked earth and forest floor. There was some sappy/stemsy lift to the wine and it was sweet and textural in the mouth. It felt like a wine from a warm year but still possessed good brightness and energy.

awesome! great note Jeremy. I’m dying to try a pre 90 dujac CDLR.

Sounds like treat! Thanks for sharing.

I keep wondering if 2003 might end up something like this in 20-30 years.

Jeremy, thanks for your note and the background - sounds terrific!

Cheers, Howard

I’ve only had a couple of '76s and the most recent about 4 years ago or so. Forget the producers. They were stubbornly tannic, sort of like '75 Bordeaux, but they did have character! Yours sounds much better.

Let me know next time you are in NY…think I can manage this one.
