1975 Weingut Baumann Oppenheimer Sackträger Riesling Auslese - Germany, Rheinhessen (9/17/2009)
– popped and poured –
– tasted non-blind over 3 days –
– tasted from 700 mL –
– AP #: … 10 76 –
NOSE: immediately get botrytis spice – smells a lot like a Tokaji – marmalade, golden raisins, and brown twigs; gentle and moderately expressive; very faint minerality in the background. By Day 3, a petrol/pine sol note came to the forefront, and I’d say the bouquet opened up some, otherwise the same as Day 1.
BODY: rich amber color; medium-full bodied.
TASTE: the flavors are a bit less intense than the weight of this wine would indicate; this is still good, but I think its best years have passed; golden raisins and marmalade are repeated on the palate, with a petrol note hiding there behind; finish is light in intensity, but has great length (55-65 sec.); as tasted on Day 1, I would probably peg this as a 4 Putt. Tokaji, if served blind. Day 3 shows more Riesling character and also a bit more oxidation. 8.5% alc.; Very nice. This isn’t going to get any better. Drink over next two years.
B: 50, 5, 12, 16, 7 = (90 pts.)
