TN: 1971 Jadot Beaune Clos des Ursules

It is rare that I run into absolute bargains but here you go.
I got this for a song. Recently too. From a cellar of impeccable provenance.

1971 Jadot Beaune Clos des Ursules

The nose is penetrating and focused in character. A core of dark red vibrant fruit. Lots of earthy notes. Caressing. Gorgeous. A powerful loaded palate of red fruit and black burgundy truffle. What persistence. Incredible volume. The finish is blisteringly long. This is one of the greatest Beaune 1er’s of my life.

I talked with Jacques about this last week. He told me I have a gem.
A difficult year but a great wine was made at Jadot.

Profound!
Wow!

After talking to Jacques, you just couldn’t wait…

Don, fantastic note - really descriptive, and successful in making me jealous!

To be one of the greatest 1er Beaunes you’ve had is also quite interesting. The frosting on the cake is that you got it for a deal!!! UGH!

Michael,
I could not help myself.
I have 7 more for sharing.

Todd,
This is a special bottle.
The fact that it was a good buy is just icing.

Absolutely agree…

Niiiiice. This is the kind of bottle that wold have me salivating. In what sense was 1971 a difficult year? I’ve never had one that wasn’t totally awesome.

Thanks Keith.
I think the year required a little bit of triage at the table.
A great year for sure.
This is such a great bottle of wine!

Don,

Thanks for the lovely note. I was surprised like Keith to read your comment about 1971. All the 71s I’ve had have been stunning. And it’s a birth year to boot, so careful how you respond… [wink.gif]

Seriously, sounds like a lovely experience.
Cheers! [cheers.gif]

Well done, Don. Excellent note. Sounds like a lovely wine. What a treat.

Clos des Ursules ages unbelivably. Recently I had 1959 from a 3L and it was one of the best wines I ever had in my life…it had color of young wine and intensity like I never seen before.

Michel,

It was a low yield year with lots of hail damage.
Those that made good wines however really scored big.
Vogue, Rousseau, DRC etc all killed this one.

You are lucky.
My birth year is 1958.
Other than Barolo/Barbaresco, it is pretty sparse.

Cheers,

Leo,

This brings me close to jealousy!
I can only imagine how great that was.
Hope to see you again some time soon.

Another interesting thing about this bottle, the label was obviously before some serious regulation on labeling.

It says:

Beaune Clos des Ursules

Grand Cru (Seul Prop.)

I know they changed the label at some point to Beaune 1er cru from Vignes Franches.

A fascinating label.

Any info here.
Positive this is not a fake because of provenance plus who wants to fake this wine?

71 Vogue rocks!

PM me when you come to NY, would love to see you again and share some nice wine.
