TN: 1968 Mayacamas Late Harvest Zinfandel. The Best Wine I've Ever Opened

Wonderful post and congratulations on the success in your business. One of the wines that I enjoyed most in my life was a 1973 Geyserville Zin from Ridge about 5 years ago. Birthyear wine, we drank it celebrating a Buckeye win over the Team Up North. The wine was spectacular, everyone commented on it, and sharing it with family on a special day made it even more special. I love wine for all of the reasons you stated, this story reminded me of that day.

That color is just crazy, barely bricking at the rims. Sounds fantastic

Right! Truly an amazing, seemingly bulletproof wine.

Great note and good news on the career milestone, Rich. Enjoy both experiences and ride that wave! :wine_glass:

Thank you Jim!

Thanks Brian! Appreciate you buddy!

An absolutely stellar wine. Paul Draper said that two versions of the wine were bottled, a late harvest and a standard, but they were the same wine.

I have a couple of bottles left, which I am saving for a much more worthy occasion than an OSU win, like the Jets getting into a Superbowl. So basically, it is unlikely to ever be drunk.

Thanks for sharing your notes and the fasinating history.
The color of the wine with minimal color striations seem to indicate there is no upcoming deadline for that classic.
We sold that one and the 1972 and 1974 as well, one of which crossed my lips at a young age, the dazzling fruit was there, but it was overwhelming and unexpected which put it in a unique status.
Mind blowing that it is kicking palate like a youngster at this time.
Congrats on your experience and your stash.

Thanks Richard! And that’s awesome awesome that you sold and drank these when they were young! I’m sure they were absolute BEASTS in their youth but still would have been fun to try.

As fate would have it, i actually have a bottle of the 72 and 74 in the cellar (along with a 76 and 78). Would be fun to do a vertical tasting someday

To anybody young looking to build a cellar.

Do what Rich did.

Very well done!

Oh, that wine sounds off the charts…

To be clear, I have no dog in this fight either.

My 19 y/o son, born in Akron, is a dedicated Buckeye Honk

Wow. Happy to see this since I recently worked on re-organizing my friend’s cellar. He has one bottle of this! Going to convince him to open it with me haha
