1967 Louis M. Martini Pinot Noir - USA, California, Napa Valley (1/26/2008)
Had at dinner with friends so no formal notes just some rambling thoughts. This wine was a surprise from the very start, the cork came out in one piece and looked and felt as if it had come out of a 10-year-old bottle not a 41-year-old one. Color was surprisingly dark and clear. The nose was very Earthy with muted dark fruit. First taste and I was surprised that there were still a good amount of tannins with a nice mix of fruit. Left in the decanter for about 45 minutes and the fruit was showing more and the tannins had taken a back seat.
Of the people that tried this wine one just flat out thought it was to old and no good, two others thought it was “interesting” and they would have liked to try this 10 years ago, one said “This is the best old wine I have ever had” I thought it was good but on the downward side of its life. If you run across this wine pick it up and drink now. (88 pts.)
