1966 Château Cheval Blanc - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (12/11/2014)
Alluring, complex nose of mint, coffee, mixed currants, and brown sugar. Fruit profile not as pure/precise/delineated as other vintages I’ve had. Plush mouthfeel with powdery tannins and a nice sweet/sour balance. A little disjointed in the mouth–this kind of vanishes after the midpalate, only to reappear with a vengeance for a very long aftertaste. This is a wine that manages to showcase its finesse despite medium-plus body and concentration. Probably the weakest CB I’ve had (I wouldn’t know how to assess the 2006 because it was too young), but still a very strong showing for a not-spectacular vintage that’s almost 50 years old. (92 pts.)
