TN: 1962 Bertani Amarone and NV Jacquesson 735

The amarone was fantastic. Purchased from Rare Wine Co. the wine was in great shape. I am not familiar with older amarones, so can’t comment on what it should be, but for what it was it was fantastic. Deeply concentrated with loads of red and dark fruit. Almost like a very light syrup with very bright acidity. IMO this wine deserved a lot more air than was given. It’s just that I always fear with older wines that they will go out within an hour or so, not so the case with this wine.

The Champagne is nice, but I would not buy any more. A bit sherry like, so not my favorite style.

Tonight, will razzle dazzle with some cool cocktails.

Thanks for the notes, Otto; I haven’t had any really old bottles from them, but from what little I have had Bertani is my favorite Amarone producer (though they don’t seem to get much love on Cellartracker.)

I’ve only had a couple of Jacquessons but was similarly unimpressed.

The old Amarones from Bertani, in the great vintages like 62 and 64, seem to age like glaciers move - very, very slowly. I am not surprised your 62 was so impressive. Also, when it comes to “old” Amarone, I have never, ever had one fade/“crack up” after opening, like you hear about with older Bordeaux or Burgundy. If anything they just get better… and better… and better. :~)
