TN: 1961 Louis Martini Mountain Pinot Chardonnay, Private Reserve

Well this was fun! I’ve found that most Louis Martini reds from the 60’s and 70’s have held up incredibly well, but this was my first white from that era….and it has also stood the test of time! The cork was in INSANELY good shape. Like…..almost impossibly good (good thing nobody would ever fake most of the wines I drink ha!), and the color was a fairly light yellow/orange, which are all obviously good signs. In the mouth, this was really nice. Not earth-shattering good, but a lovely light-bodied white that was full of acidity, hints of citrus/lemon, and a tiny bit of baked apple on the finish. Pretty damn impressive for a 65 year old Pinot Chardonnay! Not as memorable as the 1968 Heitz Pinot Chardonnay Lot Z-82 that I drank last year (by FAR my favorite white wine ever), but really fun to open. I’m lucky enough to have another bottle in the cellar, which I’ll probably hold for a while to see what happens

WOW, nice going Rich! I see some other oldie Chards in there as well! I don’t think anything will EVER come close to that 68 Heitz!

Thanks bud! And i agree, that 68 Heitz is literally legendary. I doubt I’ll ever drink a white that tops it!

And i do have a few older chards in there! Harder to find but i try to scoop them up when i can. 75 Montelena is probably one of the bottles I’m looking forward to the most

Thanks Anton - really appreciate it buddy!

Hope you’re drinking something great on this fine Friday!

Ha ha! That’s awesome. At least I’m predictable i guess, ha!

Cheers my friend!

Great note!

Well, it’s probably only a few decades away from maturity, so why don’t you try it around 2045 ?

Love the note. Those older Cali’s can be shockingly good. Thanks.

The Louis Martini from that era were heat pasteurized, which I think helped them to hold up for so long. At least that’s what I’ve always heard.

I think I served a 1970 Martini “Mountain Barbera” in the last year or two which was in good shape.

Totally agree! Cheers Brad!

Yep, i remember reading that as well…and there must be something to it as literally every older bottle I’ve had has been in good shape! I’ve got a couple 1955 cabs (Mom’s birth-year) which will be the ultimate test!

And i freaking love those Barberas! Have a few older ones in the cellar but always looking for more.
