1949 Langenbach - Deideseimer Kieselberg (Rheingau, Germany)
A warm Sunday in London, c27c, and I wanted to share a mature German Riesling with family over luncheon. This bottle was imported by Percy Fox & Co Ltd, Rex House, London EC4. I had shared my other bottle with wine loving friends in North London about 18 months ago. The original cork came out in one piece. The colour is clear chestnut. The dry nose reminds me of beeswax polish, old wooden furniture and almond preserve. Interesting, the mouthfeel has a vein of sweetness running through the dry body. Taut, savoury, alive, we all marvelled at this wine that was 67 years old. Probably past its peak but still providing pleasure.

Love the fish and crown on the label!
What level was this? I don’t see a Pradikat listed?
One of the finest wines I’ve ever had was a 49 JJ Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Feinste Auslese, served in 2004. Beyond great, and utterly fresh.
Pre Pradikat. Crop was probably harvested and vinified all at once.
Pre pradikat is everything before 1971.
100% agree on the label. Simply fantastic. Jealous of both you guys. Older Rieslings are magnificent.
Amazing, just a few years after the end of the war.
Wow! Thank you for that exotic journey!
Thanks for the pic, as well!
Nice. FYI Deidesheim is in the Pfalz not the Rheingau and the Kieselberg is still around (not renamed). Langenbach is too although they are now part of Bernard-Massard and located in Trier (OG from Worms in Rheinhessen). It looks like this was bought in bulk and bottled by them, which was common at the time. Cool that it was good.
Cheers,
Bill
Thank you chaps!
Bill, thank you for the clarification. It was a tasty bottle.
The info from Bill is awesome. Next time in London I will be meeting with Nicos and hope to share a similar riesling!! Not from Canada I hasten to add.
The last time i shared an evening with Nicos was very very memorable
.
Nowadays Kieselberg Weinlagen. Of course, this does not mean it was just the same in 1949. Probability is high though as it is only 19 ha.
Hi Bob,
Looking forward to your next visit to London! I have a special bottle of German Riesling allocated to you.
Charlie, thank you for this link.
