TN: 1947 Cave du Val-Clos Châteauneuf-du-Pape "Chatel du Roy"

  • 1947 Cave du Val-Clos Châteauneuf-du-Pape "Chatel du Roy" - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (2/20/2015)
This bottle had a very high fill and was expressive from the get go. It smells of smoked meats, dried flowers, mushrooms, sweet earth, rosewater and licorice. You get Turkish delight flavours coupled with plenty of savoury elements. It is full and sweet with good intensity and a finish that is fresh despite the low acid feel. Outstanding!

A real wow experience. Where did you find the bottle?

Hi Andrew, it was part of a parcel of things I recently acquired out of France.

Best Regards
Jeremy

old CDP, I <3 it. Had the pleasure of drinking a perfectly stored bottle (single owner, sat in the cellar at least for 30+ years) 53 Clos Saint Jean and it blew me away!

Thanks again for the great notes!

Incroyable pileon

Jeremy,
Thanks for the TN. In my limited experience, both the 1947 and 1949 CdP’s can still drink well if from good provenance.

Cheers,
Nicos
