TN: 1937 Mähler-Besse & Cie Richebourg, Grand Cru

From a bottle that had leaked a little in transit. Absolutely splendid. Deep in appearance and deep of personality. Complex aromatics of moss, bitter chocolate, grilled nuts, undergrowth and seaweed. A little meaty with air and tinned fruit sweetness at its core. Rich, layered and possessing the texture of an oyster. Full, built, expansive and long. So ethereal. So engaging. So long.

It would be really fascinating to know the exact origin of what is in the bottle though I guess the information is long lost, if it ever existed.

1937 is a splendid vintage. A RSV 1937 Leroy is one of my best wines ever (source of wine also unknown).

Great note, do you happen to have a picture of the bottle?

!!!

Never had a wine where I would say this. But maybe you get those special Richebourg-style oysters in AU!

I would love to know the source, Tom.

A great vintage, Paul. Been luck enough to have had a few stunning bottles from it.

J, I will try and post a pic a bit later today.

Rahsaan, I have seen this slippery, oyster like texture in a few very old Burgundies. I kind of reckon it might be something that comes from wines off ungrafted vines?
