TN: '17 Lafon Horizontal / CdM / 01 Rousseau / Cros P

Another great night in PR at the 1919. Wines were really on point as usual with some special showings. We also had the '17 Meursault Village and Clos de la Barre at lunch earlier in the day with the Barre showing a clear step up in depth and interest.

2017 LAFON HORIZONTAL AT 1919 - (1/10/2026)

CdM

  • 1988 Krug Champagne Clos du Mesnil - France, Champagne
PnP. Tight on first pour, but could tell this was going to be special. Opened with air and showing perfectly. Precision, depth and drive. Absolutely bursting with flavor framed by a perfectly balanced acid. Finish goes on and on. (98 points)
  • 1995 Krug Champagne Clos du Mesnil - France, Champagne
PnP. Cold honey on the nose. Palate is good and wide. This is a very voluptuous wine. Finish was a touch clipped and bested by the other worldly 88 beside.

Lafon Intro

Lafon Closers

  • 2017 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Charmes - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Double decant 3 hours. Beautiful perfumed nose. Round and voluptuous structure. An opulent wine that is drinking fabulously right now.
  • 2017 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Double decant 3 hours. Soft and round structure but with a depth of minerality. This cuvÊe always seems to be a cross between the opulent Charmes and steely Perrières and this was no exception. Beautiful.
  • 2017 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Double decant 3 hours. Very steely and mineral driven. Needed the most air in the glass to open up. Latent power and drive. Tons of depth and electricity. Finish goes on and on. Stupendous tonight.
  • 2017 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Montrachet - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Double decant 3 hours. Shows the extra volume and sheer depth of fruit. Very powerful wine with structure and tension. Very good, but this bottle didn't quite have the final gear and electricity as some have.

Nice notes! glad the 01 Rousseau are coming into a good drinking window, I have quite a few of them.

Thanks for the notes. General question for the group, is there a Poruzots that anyone adores?

I had a 2008 Jobbard Poruzots that I found quite good in December. Really good, in fact.

I’ve never had a horizontal like this one tho. With any producer, let alone Lafon :face_with_hand_over_mouth:.

Used to buy and often drink 95 Rouget Cros. Was about $180. Must have had 2 cases. Great wine.

Great set of wines! I really did thing the ‘95 Mesnil had great pep and acid driven youth going on - got better in the glass toward the end. The Gouttes was FABULOUS - as you know - this one seems to always shows really nice when tasting at the cellar. The Charmes was and will be the best “buy” of the higher end 1ers at Lafon - there’s always more of this one anyways so don’t feel bad about being allocated (if you are….) Charmes more than the others. The MP was great of course with the Genevieves properly placed in the middle. I really did like the Clos St Jacques - had lots of that earthy Gevrey going on - layered for sure. The CrosP bottles were fun and confirmed that maybe CP is a wee bit overrated. The ‘04 had no greenies going on except for a really nice minty chocolate flavor - not bad but average.

San Juan is a fabulous place to visit - lots of great food and wine + culture going on. CHEERS

I like Lafon’s Porusots and I buy it and drink it all the time. That and the Charmes are my best value wines in the lineup year in and year out. When you drink all of these side by side you can really pick out the differences. I actually learned a lot about the Goutte as I haven’t had much of that and I think it outperformed. Obviously these wines have different price points so it’s not just a matter of strictly which one is better.

Cros P is overrated or Meo Cros P is overrated?

Interesting, sold Jobard when we had Martine’s and when the Poruzots wasn’t oxed it was always a bit flat and one dimensional.

Not a price discussion at all, all quality, I have just never had a really thrilling Poruzots compared to other 1ers. It’s always been fine, but just that, fine.

How about non-Jayer Cros P is overrated?

Maybe ‘flat & one-dimensional’ when young can evolve into grassy, smooth, and subtle? :person_shrugging:

I don’t drink any Meursault young if I can help it, let alone that era of Jobbard, so no idea. Merely one data point :smirk:

For me the Jobard years were late 90s thru mid 2000s.

Never got to 2007 or 2008.

Rarity is a big reason these wines are so expensive so yes. On the other hand - lots more time is needed in both cases of the CrosP so only time will tell.

95 and 95 Rouget Cros had Henri’s hand in them.
