Greetings, I tend to lurk more than I post, but this tasting was good enough to share.
4/14/11 tasting at Western Reserve Wines. Presented by Thomas Haehn who is the brother of the winemaker but currently lives in Nashville. He provided lots of information on the estate and its wines, as well as German wine in general. Two things that struck me in particular are 1. ALL of these were VERY good and 2. I’ve never tasted so many wines where the nose and palate on the wines matched up almost exactly. This is the first time I’ve had this many wines from the same producer and vintage, and it was fascinating to taste the differences. My notes aren’t as detailed as they might otherwise be due to only having ~2oz tasting pours.
08 Riesling Sekt Brut
Stone fruit nose. Apple, lime and a bit of toast on the palate. Great aciditiy. 90+
08 Riesling Estate Dry
Stone fruit nose, peach and apricot on the palate, along with slate and mineral notes. Moderate acidity, lengthy finish. 88
08 Riesling Estate
Pear and peach on the nose and palate, with a powder sugar finish. 87
08 Koberner Weisenberg Riesling Apollo Spatlese (dry)
The nose is very floral, along with aromas of apricot and a very distinct Fruit Loop component. The palate mirrors the nose exactly. Very enjoyable. 90
08 Koberner Weisenberg Riesling Kabinett
Grapefruit/nectarine nose. The wine tastes just how it smells- juicy notes of grapefruit and nectarine. Good acidity, lengthy finish. 90+
08 Koberner Weisenberg Riesling Spätlese
Nectarine, slate and lilly aromas on the nose. The palate has a delicious peaches and cream/orange creamsicle aspect. The finish isn’t as long as the others. 89
07 Koberner Weisenberg Riesling Auslese
Peach, honey and nectarine notes on the nose. Honeyed peach notes on the palate. Crisp, juicy, balanced, smooth, delicious. 92
He said this wine had some botrytised grapes and was not produced in 08 (unfortunately) due to all of the 08 botrytised grapes going into trocken/beerenauslese bottlings.
NV High Def Dornfelder
Bing cherry/black raspberry nose and palate. Light, sweet, but not cloying. Someone said it was like a sangria, but not having to add anything to the wine, which I think fits the bill perfectly. 82
