Color me a skeptic re: '07 CdP. I haven’t tasted many, but they’ve been very hit & miss for me so far. Being a fan of VT, I was anxious to try this. Since my local shop just got theirs in a couple of days ago, I decided to give one a try.
This was decanted for about an hour prior to serving. Shimmering dark ruby color. Bright fruit aromas and pepper. Surprisingly elegant, there is no evidence of over extraction or over ripeness. Naturally, it’s quite primary, but delicious nonetheless. No detectable alcohol. There are tannins present, though they are fairly fine. I think this one is for real & I’m a buyer. This is a classic CdP that will likely have a bright future.
That’s also one of the 2007s I bought. Actually, I bought it on futures but having now tasted the wine I’m quite happy I did. I plan to sit on most of them (at least, that’s the plan). Like many people, I find them to really hit their stride with at least 10 years of age.
Count me in as a fan. I bought a local btl a week ago Friday, tried it and bought 4 more on Saturday before the WS 100 was released, thank god. Great stuff and very much like a Burg in weight and elegance. I usually don’t rely on Parker’s scores to point me in the right direction but he had this right. VT is a great producer!
if you like the VT you should try Clos la Roquette. This is Daniel Brunier’s own property so he and his brother make the wine along with VT. [** DISCLAIMER ALERT**] I do represent this wine in my market but it is an incredible value, espicially when compared to the current VT price.
My dissapointment was that I did not detect any garrigue in the wine. As such, it did not taste like a CdP to me. Very good fruit, but not what I expected.
Otto, I think VT is often very fruit driven when it’s young but develops lovely secondary characteristics as it ages. That’s why I plan to hold most of them for (much) future consumption.
When I first started buying wine, VT was around $8 a bottle. Between the price and the great fruit, I was treating them like early drinkers. Then I tasted an older one and realized I was messing up.
Al, your experience with this wine is much appreciated. Anyone buying the wine when it was $8 a bottle knows a ton more than I know.
Here in SD the 750 were selling for $50 and they will get more in December. Also at that time they were selling the half bottles for $27.95. I will try to get some of the halfs.
