TN: 07 Velt.1, 05 Croix Mouton

2007 Velt.1 Gruner Veltliner
Around $12 Ohio. Green/sliver in color, clear and bright. Screwcapped. This wine was consumed over two nights and got better on day 2. The nose was originally tight and steely. With air, it showed some herbal qualities and some white pepper. It is crisp on the palate and easy to drink. On the second day, it was more interesting with some citrus interspersed with minerality. Nice finish. This was a great value and excellent food wine. 50+3+12+17+7=89

2005 Chateau Croix Mouton
Popped and poured which was probably a mistake. This took a few hours to unwind. Purple in color, ruby on the rim. The nose shows cassis, cherries and leather. On the palate, this starts out strong but kind of fades away on the finish. It is still primary and while tasty, needs more time to develop. It seems very tight right now compared to release. $25 Ohio. I will hold my remaining bottles. All that said, it also represents good value. 50+4+12+17+6=89

I second that GV #1 review. This week has been muggy and gross in Boston, so my hand keeps finding a bottle of Hirsch’s basic Gruner. Quite the refresher.

I love the Hirsch bottling as well. Velt.1 is from a different producer and a different part of Austria. Very similar bottlings in terms of QPR and style though. If they were from California I am sure there would be litigation over the name.
