Wow! Thanks for the note. Sounds like the 2007 HB is something else. I haven’t even opened a 2006 yet. Then again, I think that vintage requires more time across the board than the 2007 Copain wines.
FWIW Brad, I have the exact opposite reaction, regarding the '06 and '07 Copain pinot noirs… altho I’m not sure by “across the board” you meant to extend it to the pinots. I cannot comment on the '07 syrahs yet.
My wife calls the HB liquid velvet. Amazing stuff.
I’ve got to agree with Mike D. and pile it on…Wells has made a series of bold decision that seem to be paying huge dividends, at least for my palate. Wells, Kevin Harvey and a few other new generation CA producers seem to understand that winemaking starts with soil and climate and continues through timely picking and thoughtful and transparent winemaking. I’m preaching to the choir here, but I’m just saying…
P, Rob, seems you liked this bottling, too. Might end up for me being my wine of the year. it´s certainly early in 2010 still but having drank this wine 4 times now since release, it´s truly a wine that for me is best of class.
2007 Copain Syrah Hawks Butte Vineyard- USA, California, North Coast, Yorkville Highlands (2/26/2010) Copain Dinner With Wells Guthrie In The OC (Studio Restaurant @ The Montage, Laguna Beach, CA): As I have written before about wines that really thrill me…when a wine can thrill over a span of time, in different settings and contexts, with consistent pleasure and grace, this is a wine that is worthy of praise: it stands up no matter where one puts it. Once again, the 07 HB does it again. A nose of blood, olive and garrigue, with hints of bacon fat. A palate filler, broad and so balanced with roasted red fruits and a long gamey finish. This wine strikes me again as amazing and continues to be my WOTY candidate, this now being the third time I have enjoyed it since release, and once again just a thrill to drink.
