06’ Drouhin Montrachet ‘Marquis de laguiche’- Got this on winecommune for a waayyy to good to be true price. When I received the wine the cork was slightly raised and was a leaker, so I was not expecting much…
Opened at 8:30 this morning (it’s 9pm now) and the nose was fantastic, Thank God, I thought this was going to be shot. Lemon peel, expensive aromas of a brand new luxury car, whiff of vanilla, spring breeze, lemon peel, rocks. The palate shows medium + acid (but not out of place) vanilla, toasted barrel, lemon curd, n a very understated way.
This wine was fantastic from beginning to end with enormous flavor and length but very understated in an amazing way. This is not necessarily too young, to me it’s in a perfect place but has years to go to really reach what it could become.
I never would have opened this but a) it was a 06’ White Burgundy and b) the conditions stated above.
If you own this, you don’t need me telling you when to open it or how long it will last!
Luxury car aromas? I must have this wine!
I’ve always had good to great success with this bottling. Certainly not the best of the Big M crowd but a damn nice wine that usually lives up yo the pricing. Drank a 2000 on a self-guided tour of the vineyard back in 08 and it was T-rific.
06 Whites might be one of the only vintages with astronomically low pre mox rates. One of my good friends thinks 2003 will be like that also. The wines are going to be really nice. Lower acidity but they are and will remain lovely IMHO.
Yes,
100% spot on here Don…our experiences exactly.
Why do you think they will have a lower rate of premox?
This whole premox debacle seems like it should be able to be solved through science and I’m surprised no on has been able to solve it.
But good to know on the style of 06’. This was a lovely wine, understated and very classic.
Well - but one of the best - always!
While I never had the 2006, several other vintages were always among the best when tasting Ms or other white burgs.
In my comprehensive M-tasting in 2010 with 30 different producers/bottlings the Laguiche 1998 was 2nd in my rating, and 3rd in groups rating, both after DRC 2000 (and 1995 Lamy-Pillot) … and before Ramonet, Lafon, Sauzet, Leflaive etc.
I personally think these vintages that are lower in acid see more sulfur.
I only have my thoughts however on this. No hard data.
Nobody knows at this point. John Gilman is even giving a disclaimer to his drinking intervals because of this.
