TN: '06 Château Mourgues du Gres Costières-de-Nîmes Terre d'Argence

  • 2006 Château Mourgues du Gres Costières-de-Nîmes Terre d’Argence - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Costières-de-Nîmes (6/10/2009)
This wine is predominantly Syrah with about 10-15% Grenache mixed in, all from 40 year old vines. Very expressive nose with crushed plums, some slight notes of bacon and herbs. On the fuller side of medium bodied with great plumy fruit and wonderful texture. A nice balance of acidity up front, which gives way to very fine tannins on the finish. My only gripe is that the finish could probably be a bit longer but that’s really just nit-picking. I picked this wine up on a whim as I have never had anything from this appellation before and this was quite delicious and also nicely priced at around $17. (89 pts.)

Rob was texting me last night, raving about the 06 of this wine and it’s QPR, so having nothing else to do because the wife was out, I ran out to Winex to pick up the 07. WA rated this 92, and while it was good, a 90+ point wine this is not. However, it is a great QPR buy and I will likely pick it up again.

Soon as I popped the cork, the nose jumped out of the bottle full of raw red meat, herbs, and plums. The initial taste was a dense mess of tar, burnt tobacco, and tannin. It really was all over the place, and I almost put the cork back in and walked away based on that first glass. After about 2 hours of evolution, however, I felt it hit a sweet spot where the juicy plums began to shine through to balance out those earthy and meaty flavors. A really great balance of acidity out of the finish gives this wine structure and presence. This is definitely only an infant, and it really needs some bottle age to settle down and come together. A friend had the 06 on the same day and loved it, so perhaps a year will do this some good as well. (87 pts.)
