05 SEVEN STONES, 03 CLOS DES PAPES - The front patio (7/13/2014)
Yesterday, my wife and Tom and Kathy F went to the Indians game. It was a 3:00 start and a hot and humid day. A lot of fun. After, we all came back to our home and opened a couple of bottles. Just chilling on the front patio as the day cooled down and talking about life, wine, LeBron, and everything else. Ideally both of these wines should have been given some air, but we were being spontaneous and didn’t really plan for this. Even so, it was a great showing for them.

2005 Seven Stones Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
Pop and pour, but this wine does need some air or time. In any event, it drank very well with the last glass the best. Purple/ruby in color. Jane said there was some browning, but I didn’t see it. Great nose of cassis, and cherries with some sandalwood. Full bodied. complex on the palate, but still not at peak. Nice finish. This is a great wine and delivers. A bit too pricey for me but glad I still have a few vintages in the cellar. (95 pts.) -
2003 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
This was pop and pour and really needs air or decanting to open. It eventually did but took some time. dark ruby in color. The nose is clean with cherries, dark cherries, spice and floral notes. Full bodied. On the palate, this is lush. No heat. Plenty of depth with layers of fruit and earth. Long finish. Drinking very well now, but I would slow-ox it for a few hours at least. (95 pts.)
We finished with some Macallan’s 18 Year Scotch and said good night. Perfect.
