DINNER AT TRELIO - Clovis Ca. (8/15/2014)

4 of us meet for dinner in Clovis ca. for some big dogs……
White Burgs

  • 2001 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Wow this is rich! Lot of smoke and caramel reduction, ripe yellow fruits, but with killer citrus lemon acidity to keep it fresh. Sautéed green apples in butter….exotic honey, chalk dust, match strike, creme brûlée, white flowers….sneaky alive….plenty and minerality and freshness to go with all the richness…nothing really blew off here….but I really liked it! (94 pts.)
  • 2005 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
Started pretty coiled….took some time to open, but did nicely! Classic subtle Rav….waxy yellow fruits with crisp green apple and creamy pear….bees wax, spearmint, clean sea breeze, lemon and crushed oyster shell……again, all subtle but plenty in there! Tasty! (93 pts.)

Old Dude

  • 1962 Georges Noellat Grands-Echezeaux - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
Ex cellar……beautiful old burgundy! Youthful(maybe some topoff?) delicate silky smooth berry fruit…med bodied with subtle leather, rose petal florals, sous bois, dusty old cellar, crushed minerals……not much “Flagey” spice ……really held up well throughout the night, even becoming a chameleon showing some strawberry with herbs, coffee…….a solid 52 yr old here.

Big Gun Cabs

  • 2005 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
98% Cab Sauv, 2% Cab Franc…had along side 05 Harlan……always a treat! More feminine to the masculine Harlan….beautiful red liqueured berry fruits….soft satin tannins, pretty cake spices, licorice, subtle smoked cedar and flower florals…full bodied in perfect balance. Gained more and more as the night went on. Plenty of structure to go further. These are the real deal! (97 pts.)
  • 2005 Harlan Estate - USA, California, Napa Valley
Had along side 05 SE….this was a dark beast…more masculine to the feminine SE. Ripe but not too sweet dark berry fruit(plum, boysenberry, black cherry) creme de cassis, cocoa nibs…deep spices, graphite powder, licorice…smooth yet powerful still, good acidity to the rich fruit. Got even bigger as the night went on…but gave the nod to the SE with a little more complexity and better feel. (96 pts.)
  • 1991 Dalla Valle Maya - USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
50/50 Cab Sauv/Franc….this took some time to really open, but boy did it!! Super 91 here……smooth mouth coating dark berry fruit, perfectly ripe with nice dryness, resolved sweet tannins, dusty cocoa powder, cedar spice, flowers and minerals……mellow power here….seemless balance……gained and gained as the night went on….little cherry skin acidity to keep it fresh, slight aged nuttiness, even showed some wintergreen herbs ala Heitz Martha’s….would best a lot of first growths imo. Awesome wine! (97 pts.)

Barolo Cleanser

  • 1990 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Ohhhh I wish I had more time with this one! Came at the end of the night of some heavy hitters……hugely structured but almost somewhat delicate with quiet power……little old cellar funk, strawberries, cherries, dusty orange spice, dried berry, licorice, tar….beautiful rose and smoke wood florals….finesse. I’m sure after a long decant, this would rock hard! Wonderful! (95 pts.)
