  • 2005 Ridge Geyserville - USA, California, Sonoma County (10/2/2009)
From a 375. Purple in color, mostly opaque and bright. Great nose of black and red raspberries, leather and bramble. Full bodied. Nice complexity. Really lush texture. This bottle was young but really providing a lot of pleasure. After a couple of less than thrilling wines this week, both Jane and I commented that this bottle was singing. great purple fruits on the palate. 50+4+13+18+7=92 (92 pts.)
  • 2004 Rhys Alesia Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (10/2/2009)
Ruby/cherry in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose is clean (whew) with cherry soda and some candied qualities. On the palate, this wine is relatively simple but nice. It has the coating from a candied apple flavor with a bit of a cherry soda. I enjoyed the wine but was not blown away. 50+4+12+16+6=88 (88 pts.)
  • 2005 Feudo Maccari Nero d’Avola ReNoto - Italy, Sicily (10/2/2009)
We went out to eat at a local place called Tuscany. I asked about corkage, but they said no. They insisted they had a “awesome” wine list. Hardly. At least it had some choices and was not expensive. This was $20 off the list which was reasonable. Served too warm, I really should have had them cool it down. The food was great though! Purple in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has not much but some plums and raspberry jam. A bit of pepper. On the palate, this is simple. Generic purple fruits. Some heat. Not a good match for the food though. 50+3+11+15+5=84 (84 pts.)
  • 2005 Domaine d’Aupilhac Coteaux du Languedoc Montpeyroux - France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Coteaux du Languedoc Montpeyroux (9/30/2009)
Purple in color, opaque and bright. This seems much more shut down than a couple of previous bottles (or it might just be off). The nose has copious amounts of brett on it that also carries thru to the palate. Slight black raspberry notes on the palate. Drying tannins on the finish. A disappointing bottle and I won’t open anohter for a couple of years. Not sure what was going on here. 50+4+11+15+5=85 (85 pts.)
