TN: 04 Alesia Pinot Kanzler, 03 Coudoulet, 01 Ravenswood, 03 Notaio La Firma AdV

  • 2004 Rhys Alesia Pinot Noir Kanzler Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (10/11/2009)
Ruby in color, mostly clear and bright. This has a nice nose, earthy with macerated cherries. Very pleasant. On the palate, it is good but not great. A bit too tart and a bit too thin for that level. That said, it went well with food and was very enjoyable. (89 pts.)
  • 2003 Cantine del Notaio Aglianico del Vulture La Firma - Italy, Basilicata, Aglianico del Vulture (10/11/2009)
I think this was better young. Perhaps at an awkward stage, but the oak and tannins dominate the fruit at this point. Nice mouth feel. This was popped and poured. I liked it enough, but the oak was troublesome to an extent. Nice black cherry fruits and good acidity though. (88 pts.)
  • 2003 Château de Beaucastel Côtes du Rhône Coudoulet de Beaucastel - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône (10/11/2009)
This was nice and I would not have suspected it of being an 03. Purple in color. The nose has some stink to it but not over bearing for me. Earthy and black raspberries. Nice texture. No heat. This seems to be advancing quickly but no hurry. (88 pts.)
  • 2001 Ravenswood Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County - USA, California, Sonoma County (10/11/2009)
I am not sure if I ran into a better bunch of these but I have gone thru a bunch since release and this has always shown well. Excellent for its $15 price tag. This was the last bottle and while it is starting to fade, this also showed well. At this point, the oak has out lasted the fruit, but theer is still some. Nice texture and easy to drink. Varietally correct. No shame here. (87 pts.)

Loren,
I had a Alesia Kanzler just a few weeks ago that was similar, but not that tart for me. It was more enjoyable then Alesia Kanzlers past, which have been too candied for my taste. Thanks again for the notes.
