TN: 03 Jaffurs Petite, 06 l'Edre Carremont Rouge

I ventured over to the other side for Game Night at George’s last night. First time in quite some time. Besides these two wines we had a coupld of beers. One in particular, a Great Lakes Barrel-aged Blackout Stout was particulalry amazing. As for the wines:

  • 2003 Jaffurs Petite Sirah Thompson Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley (10/16/2009)
George opened this one laughing that it was one of the oldest bottles in his cellar. Still drinking young and with air, it just seemed to get younger. A beautiful wine. It would make it hard not to open any younger versions except I see how slow these mature. Gobs of black raspebrries, minerals, a hint of smoke and maybe some blueberries yet this is more than just a fruit bomb. Seamless and lush. Complex. With air, the tannins came out, but it was compelling to the last drop. It will improve from here still. (93 pts.)
  • 2006 Domaine de l’Edre Côtes du Roussillon Villages Carrement Rouge - France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Côtes du Roussillon Villages (10/16/2009)
I brought this over in another attempt to find a French George would like. Some success here. A pretty syrah blend, but don’t be fooled by the lighter ruby color. Lots of raspberries and sunshine with a slight earthiness. Just a bit of oak showing. It straddles the new/old world line deftly with just enough acidity to keep from being flabby. Obvisoulsy young, I think this is a wine most palates could embrace. (91 pts.)
