TN: 03 Harlan Maiden, 03 Turley Petite Sirah, Hayne Vineyard

  • 2003 Turley Petite Sirah Hayne Vineyard - USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena (1/9/2007)
Very inky purple color – beautiful. Complex nose featuring raspberry, vanilla, and cherry. Very tannic upon opening. Huge, huge fruit in this one – mainly blackberry with some raspberry. Hints of oak and sage, or maybe thyme. Fruit in wine got bigger as wine opened. Wonderful, zesty wine that should be aged to soften the finish. (97 pts.)
  • 2003 Harlan Estate The Maiden - USA, California, Napa Valley (4/16/2009)
Aromas of tiramisu (big time), black cherry, and Indian spices. Great length and balance on this wine. Dark fruits dominate the palate, black cherry (again) and blackberry. Nice job with the oak, leaving a vanilla creaminess mid-to-late palate. Tannins were not dominant, but noticeable with a light steminess. Only slightly noticeable flaw was a little bit of heat on the very finish.
However, that has been very common and much, much more drastic in many of the '03 Napa Cabs I have had. (95 pts.)

Sorry for some of my recent posts being older tasting notes… practicing the new Cellar Tracker link.

Great Harlan note Eric.
I just had a second sampling of the 2003 KL Crane which is way up in the '03 ranks. Many have really shown well. We will do another 2003 Virtual Tasting real soon and hope you can join in.
Thanks for posting and welcome!

Thanks for the head’s up on the Turley. I have a lone bottle stashed away that I was planning on opening in a decade. Might have to revisit that decision in the next year or so.

Eric, nice notes. After less than stellar reviews I am happy to hear the 03 Maiden is drinking very nicely. I see another TN on CT giving the same score. This was the first year I was offered this from the list.

any brett on the hayne petite?

I don’t recall noticing that. But the tasting note was 2 years ago. Usually, in my experience, brett tends to mask or kill any fruit & I do remember strong blackberry jam flavor as it opened up.
I also remember thinking it was a 90-ish point wine, but since it was so outstanding as it opened up, I gave it the 97. I wasn’t doing WOTY’s at that point, but it was probably the one for 2007.

The Harlan Maiden is on my top 5 for WOTY’s 2009. In fact, that reminds me… time to update my signature! [cheers.gif]

** edit – nevermind. Too many characters for my signature, and I need my sports teams there!
