Has a nice nose of plums and coffee. The attack matches the nose, but then it’s all downhill as the midpalate and finish are rather hollow. Drinkable but that’s about it.
Sucks to hear that. I have had several '03s that kicked much ass and beat down some serious BDX competitors at many times the price of admission.
Bill, I still have 8 bottles of this wine and since I bought a case, I must’ve liked this wine at one time. It may be going through a phase. Lots of harsh tannins in the wine and that may overwhelm or hide the fruit. Also, it could be that the strong coffee notes will develop into nice cedar notes with some time.
I never experienced any harsh tannins in any Fombrauge…'01, '03 or even '05. Sounds like an off bottle.
You had an off bottle, or it’s seriously nose-dived since the last couple of years:
3/2/2007 rated 91 points: Notes: Nose of bacon fat and caramel gives way to a full and satisfying palate dominated by cigar box and coffee grounds, with notes of toast and cinnamon bun, girded by moderate tannins and an solid note of fruit (blueberry). (1191 views)
I thought this wine was a very nice high 80’s scorer when I had it. I didn’t buy anymore because I had plenty of wine anyway. I am curious as to whether others thinks that Dr D’s bottles was off, or has this estate’s 03 vintage crashed?
