Previewing these 2 for the dessert flight of a mixed tasting this coming Saturday. I have had them both before, & the Spreitzer many times, but I guess I don’t need much of an excuse, huh?
2003 Spreitzer “303” Ostricher Lenchen Gold Cap Spatlese
Yellow/Gold
Nose: Huge creamy peach, apricot, nectarine & mango with a spicy/sweaty/pungent hint of meyer lemon & key-lime. Fatter & broader than the more sharply focused & delineated '04, or more linear, creamy '06.
This is a sexy, fat, rich, super creamy, luscious, juicy, buxom fruit-bomb of a Riesling!
Palate: Big creamy rich apricot, amazingly clean botrytis. Spatlese??? - Yeah, right?!? Ha Ha Ha
Big, round, rich. Creamy, creamy, creamy! Great depth richness & exotic fruit. Perfect yellow peach & apricot.
Nectarine, key-lime & pungent honey dripped yellow pit fruit on palate.
A bit on the fat side, but still with tons of fresh fruitiness.
Very, very rich & fairly sweet. Definitely very well into Auslese Pradikat.
Excellent concentration, length, & balance. Decent acidity with a bit of pungent sappiness in the long finish.
A perfectly balanced Botrytis-Bomb, in fact.
Love this Riesling. Spreitzer’s “303” is one of my go-to favorite Rheingau year-in, year-out.
The '03 was my first, & I’ve probably drank a case of this stuff with never a disappointment.
94 Points.
2007 Schlossgut Diel Dorsheim Goldloch Auslese
(That’s right, no -er on the town name)
Pale yellow gold.
Nose: Etherial peach, apricot, key-lime, & wild red cherry. Nahe fire, spice, fruit cocktail, & creamy, creamy nectarine.
A stony minerality comes out with air, with exotic, pungent papaya, lime-oil, cactus pear, & guava.
All of a piece. Exotic & refreshingly fruity, with a complex minerality at the same time.
Palate: WOW! For all the beauty the nose showed, the palate turns up the volume 2 notches!
Remarkably delineated peach, apricot, key-lime, nectarine, pluot, & mango.
This one goes to 11!
Sappy, pungent, spicy, & creamy with great fruity acidity & minerality.
Lip-smackingly pungent/spicy/fruity end flavor & finish with great integrated acidity, powdered minerals, wild yellow cherries, cherry pit, with a big stoniness.
Really long, intense, & defined.
This is great wine right now, & obviously not in it’s prime yet.
The nose is beautiful, but lags slightly behind the amazing palate.
94 1/2 Points
Have to give the slight nod to the Diel, but Love this pairing.
