TN: '01 Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt GH Kabinett

  • 2001 Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (6/22/2009)
We picked this off the list at Plainfield’s Mayur on Saturday night. Paired with an assortment of Indian nibbles-- dahi wada, bhel puri, baingan bharita, and tomato-coconut soup. No notes-- just general impressions. There was the faintest hint of petrol on the nose, but the nose was still fresh and youthful and mostly about the fruit. On the palate, it was fuller, sweeter, and oilier in texture than I’d expect from a Kabinett. It drank more like a Spatlese. Not one for the ages, but regardless, it was a good match with a wide range of assertively-flavored dishes.

I thought it was mineral-y too.

I love this! An 8 year old white that probably coast less than $20 that is still fresh and delicious but isn’t one for the ages. Most reds at that age are over the hill and most whites are buried by then.

Isn’t Riesling amazing?

It is indeed! Long-lived, food friendly, and inexpensive. I love Riesling. And it was $35 or so on the restaurant’s list, so probably ~$18ish retail.

I remember a bunch of '01 kabinett that tasted more like spatlese, if not riper. I kind of struggle with that sometimes.
