TN: '01 Carillon Puligny Montrachet Champs Canet

Figure what the hey, I’ll post a TN something I rarely do anymore but used to do a lot.

Opened last nite with a friend who had never had this producer before. Started off in need of air and actually worried me a bit due to some upfront fatness. Quickly tightened up and showed the Puligny mineral and steely character I expect. With more time it slowly uncoiled into an excellent example with a long and taught finish. Really fine stuff from a great producer and a style I quite like.

I really like 2001 whites and I love me some Carillon.

Through the authorized importer, Carillon is well in excess of $100 per bottle in our market.

[I think Les Perrieres is something like $115 to $125 now.]

Another wine I’ll never drink again. Oh well.

But we got a lot of gray market 2001s back in the day.

Good times.

I paid like $40 on closeout back in the day. Like you I doubt I’ll be buying anymore.

I quite like the 2001 white and always have. In fact after last nite we decided we should revist the '01 Ramonet Batard. Seems like many of the '01 whites after being pretty closed for a spell, are coming into their own. Of course they were excellent on release as well.

Bets on the Ramonet being premoxed?

Anyone…

Bueller…

30% is my mid-line

I didn’t want to even mention that word in my post and jinx it. Like most all of us I always bring a backup when white burg is involved. Backup was a '99 Jadot Corton Charlie which, like Carillon, seems to be doing OK premox wise.

Oh man yeah.

Yeah, I remember the first time I ever had just the entry-level 2001 Carillon Puligny village wine - I was just floored at how good it tasted.

[In fact, I have pretty vivid memories of it, now that I think about it. Weird.]
