Thursday Dinner @ Nostrani

We had planned to go to Nostrani Thursday for some more tuna from Japan. We got an e-mail in the afternoon saying that they had to send it back, it wasn’t the right stuff. We decided to go anyway and try more of their new Fall menu. We left home a little early, since we were hungry; we arrived about 15 minutes early for our rez; but that wasn’t a problem. Our table was ready and we were seated. We ordered our sparkling water and a 2005 Marcarini Barbera d’Asti ‘Ciabot Camerano’. It was bright fruit & good acidity and went well with our initial courses of Belgian endive with sliced cucumber and tuna conserve for Carollee and a very tasty white bean & pasta soup with shrimp for me. The we had Secondi of pumpkin ravioli in a sage butter for Carollee and paparadelle with duck and quail porchetta. The barbera was also good with these, but didn’t last; so we ordered a 2000 Travalglini Gattinara Reserva - rich red and black fruit with slight dusty tannins, which were tempered by the food. The Gattinara was also very good with our secondi of Veal Scallopine with mushrooms for Carollee and boneless Short Ribs in a rich and thick red wine reduction on nice small brussels sprouts.

No dessert since we were quite full. We just had a couple intense double espressos and headed for home. When we got home the power was off in a large area around us. We got into our very dark house and began to light candles. Shortly the power came back on. In this morning’s paper, it said the power outage was due to a transformer fire and the period of the outage was only about an hour.

It’s 9:30 on a Saturday morning and I’m salivating reading about those pasta courses [welldone.gif] Sounds like a great meal, and nice match-ups for barbera & nebbiolo.
