Three wines at our Greek dinner ---- one Greek, one Rose, and one Zuccarino

Thanks to all for your recommendations. Ate at Kanella -BYO in Phila (10th and Spruce). First time there. Very good. Our dining companions were three chef / food writers in town for a conference. Various dishes ordered - including a very well made dorado, my mousakka, a pasta dish, and various other stuff. We started with a Rose I picked up several years ago on a trip to Provence. Then a Greek bottle I picked up at our fine PLCB outlet. The rose was very good. Greek was OK. The WOTN was one from Silver Springs - an icewine made by John Zuccarino. Fabulous. Everyone should ping him and get some. Good meal, good folks.

OK - we were eating at a Greek restaurant and I had to bring at least one Greek wine. PLCB stocks two so I just picked this one. No reason. Wasn’t bad. Musty nose - earth mostly. Actually not heavy - tannins were fine. A bit of red fruit but mostly some funk and earthy but not in a “barnyard” sense. Paired well with my Mousaka. Not bad for an under $15 bottle in PA. • 2004 Silver Springs Winery Gewürztraminer Ice Wine - USA, New York, Finger Lakes, Seneca Lake (8/6/2009)
Thanks John Zuccarino. This was fantastic. Perfect end to a great meal. Floral and apricot and mango aromas. Not too sweet and syrupy. But it had enough body to be a dessert on its own. Flavors of apricot are dominant - then some tropical fruit - passion fruit and mango - with a hint of homey. Good acid to make it mouth watering. All around a hit at the table. (92 pts.)

  • 2004 Domaine de Saint-Ser Côtes de Provence Sainte-Victoire Prestige Rosé - France, Provence, Côtes de Provence Sainte-Victoire (8/6/2009)
Purchased this at the winery during our trip to Provence in 2006. I thought this one might be over the hill. It lacked some vibrancy but overall very good. Great lite strawberry color. Good flavors of strawberry and other lighter red fruits. Good acid. Good Provencal Rose. (88 pts.)

With all of those twitter wars, where does he find the time?

He has found a way to give everyone the “Finger” Lakes [swearing.gif]
I don’t know where he finds the time - but a very nice wine.

No matter how much the Zuccarino wine was good, there is no way I can support it due to his strange and erratic behavior on the internet, especially towards friends of mine. I know it is a thin line as their are probably many undesirables as winemakers out there I don’t know about that I do drink, but the fact I know of Zuccarino and see him on the internet makes me never want to give two cents to his operation, even if the wine is good. Lots of good wine out there from people who act a lot more humble and responsible.

Holy crap — sorry I even opened the bottle [tease.gif]
If there were any way to get it back in the bottle, I would try.
How can I make it up to this august body?
Please don’t ban me.

Funny, Ted, very funny.

Lots of good wine out there from people who act a lot more humble and responsible.

If you had ever met John in person, you might understand that he can be charming, considerate, informative, and insightful, believe it or not. I’ve met him twice, the first when he and Thomas Pellechia organized a Riesling taste-off that David Bueker also attended. [scratch.gif]

The thing is I don’t want to meet him in person due to his antics, so I guess I’ll never have the honor.

Ted,

Not an indignation of you, an indignation of the man.

Hey no indignation taken.
I don’t really want to meet anyone on this board - and I am sure none of you want to meet me grouphug
