Thoughts on Rougeard 05/Baudry 07

Anybody have any experience with/notes on Rougeard 05 and/or Baudry 07?

Rougeard: I love this label, but it’s out of my price range. I’m thinking about buying a few 05’s however because, well, it’s 05. Anybody out there experience these as a “step up” from other vintages?

Baudry: I always buy Baudry. Anybody try the 07’s yet? I’m buying, but it’s just a matter of which/how much.

Here are my recent notes on the Grezeaux and Guillot. I’ve also gone through about 6 bottles of the Les Granges.

  • 2007 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Le Clos Guillot - France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon (8/21/2009)
Tried this the night after drinking Les Grezeaux, so these impressions are primarily comparisons. Compared to the Grezeaux, the Clos Guillot is more tannic and a bit shorter right now. Still great, but I’ll let these sit a bit longer before opening the next one. (90 pts.)
  • 2007 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Les Grézeaux - France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon (8/20/2009)
A fruit bomb for those of us who prefer tart and savory flavors. Just bursting with tart raspberry fruits, with some savory notes of olives and green tobacco. Long finish that calls you back. Not many young reds with a better fruit/acid balance than this. I always hate getting to the end of the bottle because it just gets better and better. (92 pts.)

I’ve not had the 05s from Rougeard, but the track record with my palate says these should be out of sight. The prices do seems a little bit high, but the wine is world class. I’m curious what the alcohol is on these. Couly Dutheil 05s were all listed over 15% on the label.

I haven’t tasted any 2005 Rougeards yet but they ought to be a no-brainer. Expensive for sure. I’ve been buying Le Bourg since 2001 and paid $50 that year; 2005 ran me $95. Still, a bargain in the grand scheme of things considering it’s at the level of the Bordeaux first growths.

Thanks for the thoughts.

There are some pretty decent deals on “Le Poyeux” out there now. The price still hurt a little bit, and I don’t like buying pricey stuff blind, but I have a good feeling about Rougeard in 05.

Sounds like Baudry was pretty good in 07 despite a troubled vintage?

James, how were your bottles of Les Granges? 07s I assume?
